ART INSTALLATIONS:
BETWEEN ART AND ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT
Abstract
Architecture and art, observed as independent researching fields, are mutually attracted. Between the fields of research of art and research of architecture there are different 'spatial practices' being developed that require parallel and interdisciplinary research approach.
Spacious works outside the boundaries of art and architectural design, which refer to transformable and transition concepts, contemporary art and architecture theory (Rendell 2006; Grosz 2001; Hill 1998) are named 'critical spatial practice' and 'spatial excess'. Pointing to arts conditioned to specific characteristic of place, conceptual architecture designs, critical performances and art installations, this theories seek to open the 'third space' as a place of dialoque between art and architecture.
Art installation, as central topic of this research, is being conceptualized and implemented between art and architectural design. The critical aspect of art installation, observed from artistic recourse, referes to assumptions redefinition related to aesthetic art object status, elitist status of institutionalized art spaces, and a lack of greater critical attention from art observers. As architectural category, installation referes to alternative spatial concepts concerning to new ways of spatial appropriations and new, interactive, relations of people and specific spatial order.
Althouhg the dominate postmodern art form, genesis of art installation in this research is monitored through the dynamic of the most significant changes in art and architectural discourses starting from the formative period of art installation (60s and 70s years of XX century) closing to the present.
The motive of this research refers to the increase in architect interest for art installation as an aspect of spatially work.
Starting from the hypothesis according to which the use of the principles used in the design and realization of the art installation might dynamize established course of architectural design, the main goal of this research is questioning and establishing installation as art and as architectural project.
