Zishi: Smart Garment for Rehabilitation (Qi Wang)

Wearable technologies for posture monitoring and posture correction are emerging as a promising way to support and enhance physical therapy treatment. For motor control training in neurological disorders or for treating musculoskeletal disorders, such as shoulder, neck, or low back pain. However, few projects draw attention to the (physical/mental) comfort, wearability and aesthetics of the system. We’re designing smart garment systems to support rehabilitation training and help to maintain correct posture in daily life. We aim on comfortable, functional, fashionable solution with merging state-of-the-art sensors and textiles, and providing effective and engaging feedback through different modalities. Our interactive wearable systems are designed for movement and posture monitoring during upper body rehabilitation and prevention. Our design considers user experience, sensing technology, measurement solution, multi-modality feedback, wearability and clinical reliability. We also designed an online platform for customization of the garment and the service so that end-users could determine how their privacy will be protected in terms of data storing and processing.

Design team: Qi Wang, Panos Markopoulos, Marina Toeters, Wei Chen and Annick Timmermans.
