THE BIRTH OF VIRTUAL DOMESTICITY.

Abstract

“The curtains of the XXI century” is the expression with which Toyo Ito tried to describe the increasingly intense relationship with a strong technological entropy that surrounds architects nowadays. Concepts such as virtual domesticity, are emerging rapidly and there are apparently no clear design guidelines for these new spaces infiltrated with technology. However, there were clear precedents for this digital spatiality in the 1960s counterculture. The treatment and design of places that welcomed psychedelic agendas established new spatial relationships through the radical use of technology. Programs such as the disco and the party dissolved into countercultural domesticity, proposing an immersive spatiality of blurred limits without segregation of uses. Deregulation and the loss of references became the way of operating in the expanded space of the New Age and allowed to lay the creative foundations for a future digital architecture.
